Bible Study Snacks
5 Unique Ways to Turn Everyday Moments Into Mini Bible Studies
There is something comforting about Jesus’ prayer, “Give us this day our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11). Daily bread is not just about food; it reminds me that God intends to meet us every single day, not only on Sundays or during a scheduled quiet time.
The other day, my wife and I were talking after work (personally one of my favorite times with her). Two things happened during our conversation yesterday. First, she lamented the fact that we haven’t had time (made time) to study the Word together. You know, life happens (wait—the Faithful Habits guy isn’t conducting consistent Bible studies with his wife?!) Second, we were working on a sensitive email to one of her coworkers. I’m so blessed to be part of that process, as she trusts me, and I get to walk with her in these things.
Before that email, though, I said, “Let’s look at what God says about approaching this situation.” One of my go-tos for work conversations is Colossians 4:6: “Let your conversation always be full of grace, seasoned with salt, so you may answer everyone.” We literally used that verse as a blueprint to craft the email, making sure each part was gracious and clear.
That got me thinking about this idea of “Bible Study Snacks.” It’s not an original idea as in the exercise community, we have these “exercise snacks,” where instead of an hour at the gym, you take little bursts (10 pushups after opening the fridge, 20 squats when you brush your teeth, etc), so we can weave Bible study snacks into our day.
Here are five ways I’ve been doing that:
Start with the Verse of the Day
Most Bible apps have a Verse of the Day, often with a short devotional video. I watch one while drinking coffee or waiting in the car. Instead of just reading it, I ask myself: how can I live this verse today? That small bite of truth can sustain me all day.Everyday Conversations
Especially when a decision is needed, I ask, “Is there a biblical example or principle here?” In fact, we used Colossians 4:6 to shape that email—full of grace, seasoned with salt. Let Scripture guide your conversations.Ask, “What Principle Is God Showing Me Right Now?”
Every day, something teaches us. Traffic teaches patience; mistakes teach humility; forgiving others teaches grace. When something happens, I ask, “What biblical principle is hidden in this moment?” The verse will come. If it doesn’t, seek it in your Bible.End the Day by Connecting One Event to One Verse
Before bed, I reflect on the day: what stood out? A tough conversation, a blessing, a prayer answered. Then I ask, “Is there a verse that connects with this?” That simple habit ties God’s presence into everyday life.Let Curiosity Lead You
When something grabs your attention (whether a phrase in a sermon, a child’s question, a headline) ask, “What does the Bible say?” Just follow that curiosity, and before you know it, you’ve spent time in God’s Word that matters because it came from something you cared about.
So, as you go through your day, remember: these small Bible study snacks don’t have to be perfect or overwhelming; just one verse, one conversation, one bite-sized spiritual snack at a time.
